Q: I am a fan from New Zealand, I bought your two 'Sensual 'DVD's from Amazon and I have a question - is the one sided hip circle you do - towards belly and outwards a verticle or horizontal? I am a little confused and when you put it in the combo (front and back and drop) I find it tricky not knowing if I am meant to do a horizontal or vertical one - thanks.
A: That is a great question and shows that you have a good understanding of movement. The answer is that it is neither 100% horizontal nor vertical, but a combination of the two. It is 3-dimensional. I would say maybe 75% horizontal and the rest vertical, but that can vary.
When you push away from the body for the outside circle, as you approach the outermost part of the circle, you are also lifting toward that point, then as you are coming back into the body, you lower back down. Same for the inside circle - your hip is higher at the outermost point of the circle.
Try doing it as a completely horizontal circle, 100% parallel to the floor. It can be done, but is flat. Adding some lift and making it 3D gives it life, sensuality and an artistic flow. You can vary the ratio to suit your mood. For fun, do one flat, followed by one 3D to contrast the two, alternate back and forth, and ramp up your repertoire! I hope this answered your question. - Shamira
